Flea Prevention Products
The most common way to stop a flea infestation from happening is by using flea prevention products. These include the following:
- Spot-on treatments that are applied directly to your dog’s skin to provide several weeks’ worth of protection
- Monthly flea control pills that interfere with flea life cycles to prevent an infestation
- Flea shampoos that protect your dog for about two weeks
- Flea collars that release flea-killing chemicals onto your dog’s skin
Flea prevention products are easy to use, although they vary in terms of effectiveness. You might need to try one or more of these products to determine which works best for protecting your dog from fleas.
Giving your house a thorough cleaning helps get rid of fleas and flea eggs. This should include vacuuming your entire home and washing your dog’s bed, blankets and stuffed toys with soap and water. If you already have a flea problem, don’t forget to vacuum your car in order to catch any fleas that you might have brought in their from the house.
Fleas thrive in grassy yards filled with bushes, shrubs and trees. Keeping these areas trimmed gives fleas fewer places to call home, which means there’s a lower risk of having them jump on your dog when he’s out there.
You can set flea traps around your home to catch any adult fleas that are around. These traps, which are sold at hardware stores, usually consist of a sticky pad that you place on the floor. Some have a light attached, since fleas like to be near bright, warm areas. The only drawback is that you won’t catch any flea eggs or larvae with flea traps, so you’ll have to rely on cleaning and flea prevention products for that.
